Title: Measuring beta decay correlations in laser trapped 21Na
Abstract: Neutral atom traps are an appealing source for b decay correlations experiments -- only the desired isotope is trapped nearly at rest in a volume of <1 mm3 and all decay products emerge from the trap volume with negligible scattering. A magneto-optical trap (MOT) is loaded with 21Na produced on-line at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. We have recently completed a measurement of the beta - neutrino correlation coefficient by measuring the time-of-flight distribution of coincident b+-21Ne events in the presence of a drift electric field. We plan to load atoms from the MOT into a spin-polarized far-off-resonance trap to measure spin-dependent b decay correlations. We are also investigating the detection of shake-off electrons instead of b+s to increase the coincident detection rate of some measurements by up to two orders of magnitude.
