Title: Measuring the Charge Radii of He-6,8 in an Atom Trap
Abstract: The short-lived isotopes He-6 (t1/2 = 807 ms) and He-8 (t1/2 = 119 ms) exhibit a loosely bound neutron halo around a He-4 like core. Charge radii measurements of these exotic isotopes probe the interaction between the halo-neutrons and the core and test detailed theoretical calculations on nuclear structure. The difference of charge radii between isotopes can be extracted from high-resolution measurements of atomic isotope shifts as long as the mass effect contribution can be accurately calculated and subtracted from the experimental values. This is the case for two and three electron system, i.e. helium and lithium. In this talk I will present a new technique for high-resolution measurement of isotope shifts in helium based on laser spectroscopy of single atoms in a magneto-optical trap. First results of trapping He-6 produced on-line at the Argonne ATLAS accelerator will be shown and prospects for measuring He-8 will be discussed.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
