Title: Superallowed Fermi beta decay studies using the 8pi spectrometer
Abstract: Precision measurements of the ft values of superallowed Fermi beta decays provide a stringent test of the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis. When combined with results from particle physics, these ft values suggest a violation of CKM unitarity at the 98 % confidence level, implying the need for an extension of the Standard Model. This result is not yet statistically definitive and further measurements are needed. As such, a programme is underway at ISAC to measure the half-lives and branching ratios of a number of these decays. A recent experiment to determine the half-life of 18Ne, the first such measurement using the 8pi spectrometer, will be discussed.
