Title:     Laser cooling and sympathetic cooling of ions

Abstract: Laser cooling method is well known for achieving extremely low temperatures. However, availability of suitable laser sources usually limits this method to alkali atoms or earth-alkali ions. By mixing the laser cooled ions with other ions, one can reduce the temperature of these additional ions (sympathetic cooling), extending the laser cooling technique.  I will discuss the laser cooling and sympathetic cooling aimed at producing large samples of ultra-cold atomic and molecular ions, for applications in nuclear physics, molecular physics, and chemistry.
