Title: Searching for Gravitational Waves With New Interferometers
Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a trio of kilometric-scale detectors employed to search for gravitational radiation from energetic astrophysical phenomena. Commissioning of the detectors located in Hanford, WA and Livingston Parish, LA has brought the instruments within a factor of two of their design sensitivity. Three data-taking runs have been completed and analyses are published or underway. In this talk we briefly overview the LIGO project: i) anticipated sources, ii) the interferometers, iii) analyses done in conjunction with the GEO collaboration. We will describe searches for gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars as examples of analysis methods and results.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
