Title: Effective Field Theories of Weakly-Bound Nuclei
Abstract: Effective Field Theories (EFTs) form a framework to describe low-energy nuclear processes as expansions in powers of the ratios between external momenta and characteristic QCD mass scales. These systematic expansions lead not only to an understanding of gross features of nuclear structure, but also a quantitative analysis of nuclear reactions consistent with the Standard Model of particle physics.
I will review the status of EFT ideas in nuclear physics. Emphasis will be on applications to weakly-bound systems, using an EFT that involves as degrees of freedom only nucleons and tightly-bound nucleon clusters. Some of the successes and open problems of the more comprehensive EFT that includes explicit pion fields - a generalization of chiral perturbation theory - will also be briefly mentioned.
