Title: Science with an EBIT: X-ray Crystal Spectrometry
Abstract: A novel x-ray crystal spectrometer has been built for the Heidelberg electron beam ion trap (EBIT) to study highly charged ions, and in particular those transitions which are of interest for testing quantum electrodynamic effects in strong fields, for probing nuclear size effects, as well as for the diagnosis of astrophysical plasmas. The spectrometer uses a new technique of optical alignment which guarantees exact determination of the Bragg angle without the need of a slit collimator. Its application at the EBIT aims at using satellite-free lines of hydrogenic ions as new x-ray wavelength standards. In the talk, the method, first results and future improvements will be presented.
