Title: Neutron Stars as a Laboratory for Dense Matter Physics

Abstract: This talk will review new observations, including timing measurements of pulsars in binaries and detections of thermal emission from neutron star surfaces, which are beginning to impose significant constraints on the structure of neutron stars. Estimates of neutron star masses set limits to the stiffness and composition of dense matter while radius estimates set boundaries to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The latter is especially important, as it is paramount to the interpretation of the masses of heavy nuclei and the neutron skin thickness of neutron-rich nuclei. In addition, the cooling histories of neutron stars are dependent on the composition of dense matter.
