Title: The influence of electron screening on lifetimes
Abstract: Recent publications [1] indicate a possible strong influence of electron screening on the decay of unstable nuclei if they are embedded in a metallic environment; even a temperature dependence was proposed. The estimates are based on observations of enhanced electron screening in d+d reactions [2] if the target deuterons are hosted in a metal. In this talk, 3 aspects of the electron screening will be discussed
- The experimental difficulties and pitfalls when measuring screening in metallic environments
- The models describing this effect and their limits
- The conclusions when these models are applied to nuclear decays.
