Title: Fusion studies with radioactive beams and their implications for the study of heavy nuclei
Abstract: The results of recent studies of fusion enhancement in the 32.38S + 208Pb reaction are described along with studies of the isospin dependence of fusion hindrance in the 124,132Sn + 96Zr reaction. These results are combined with other studies of fusion enhancement with radioactive beams to evaluate the prospects of the synthesis of transactinide nuclei using radioactive beams. Exciting new possibilities for studies of the atomic physics, chemistry and nuclear spectroscopy of the heaviest elements should be realized at 3rd generation radioactive beam facilities. The synthesis of new heavy elements is best undertaken with stable beams.
