Title: Li-8 beta-NMR of an Enhanced Paramagnetic Metal: Palladium
Abstract: In this talk I will briefly cover the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to the study of metals, and will then review the basics of the beta-NMR technique. The use of beta-NMR to study metals in the form of films and heterostructures will be illustrated with results obtained from experiments using Pd. This metal exhibits a large, exchange-enhanced Pauli spin susceptibility that places it very close to a ferromagnetic ground state. As such, the properties of Pd and its alloys have attracted attention for numerous years. Here, I will present data collected from a sample of Pd foil and a Au/Pd/SrTiO_3 film that show unexpectedly large relative frequency shifts as a function of temperature for the Li-8 probes. The observed shifts are much larger than the measured spin-lattice relaxation rates would lead one to predict. The possible origins of this behavior will be discussed. I will close with a short summary of results from recent studies using a much thinner film of Pd. The data from this sample are quite distinct from that of the thicker samples.
