Title: Following the Light in the Universe
Abstract: Many indications from Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics point to control of the universe by the dark side! Dark Matter seems to hold the universe together and Dark Energy will most likely determine its destiny. However, all the light that we “see” of the universe is generated by nuclear reactions under various stellar or cosmic conditions. Nuclear properties determine the amount of energy produced, the time-scales of various events, and finally the abundances of the elements that make up amongst other things all forms of life. One of the 11 greatest unanswered physics questions for the century as outlined in the US national academies report “From Quarks to the Cosmos” is the origin of the elements above Fe. I will talk about our recent measurements of the most neutron rich nuclei along the r-process path and how various nuclear properties (such as structure, masses, beta-decay rates) can constrain astrophysical scenarios as a bridge between astronomical observations and Astrophysical descriptions of sites where such processes could take place.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
