Title: Spectroscopic Studies of Unstable Nuclei

Abstract: The radioactive ion beams (RIB) have opened the doorway to reach out to unstable nuclei, the nuclear fuel in the stars. The synthesis of heavy elements observed on earth largely proceeds through these unstable nuclei. Exploring the structure of the unstable nuclei thus has immense importance in understanding the element synthesis in our universe and cosmic objects such as the neutron star. It will be shown that structure studies of unstable nuclei are rapidly changing our traditional nuclear physics concepts, leading to a more global view of nuclear structure. The discussion will show the changes of single-particle orbitals and shell closures far from stability line. Some experimental approaches for probing into the properties of the unstable nuclei using both high and low-energy RIB will be presented together with examples of some interesting findings.

This includes the interesting observation of unusual structure of 17Ne showing deviation from its mirror partner 17N. This possibility of breakdown of mirror symmetry led us to undertake investigation of other mirror pairs, and the preliminary observations on the structure of 9Li will be presented. An anomaly existing in our understanding of ground state of some neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei will be touched upon. The discussion will also include investigation on excited states in unstable nuclei. The new determination of lifetime of the 4.03 MeV excited state in 19Ne, with an aim to ascertain the importance of 15O(a,g)19Ne reaction in nuclear astrophysics will be shown.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
