Title: Antihydrogen Production & Positron Studies
Abstract: The ATHENA Collaboration at CERN, Geneva, was a world leading experiment in the production of and experimentation with antihydrogen. By combining antiprotons and positrons, it was the first to produce cold antiatoms in 2002, and continued experimentation until succeeded by the ALPHA Collaboration in 2005.
This seminar will summarise the PhD research carried out by the author with the University of Wales Swansea between 2003 and 2005. The methods used to produce antihydrogen will be summarised, and efforts to increase the production rate through understanding and improving the accumulation and formation of suitable positron plasmas will be described. Results will include the identification of inherent problems with the apparatus, the identification of critical parameters for plasma compression, and a complex accumulation process previously unknown. The incorporation of a laser system to increase the antihydrogen production rate and the results achieved will also be described.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk. The speaker is a candidate for a position as PET facilities operations coordinator.
