Title:     The quest for resonant nuclear excitation with photons and electrons

Abstract: Nuclear excitation mechanisms at the borderline between atomic and nuclear physics are discussed, such as coupling to the atomic shell in the process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) or the resonant driving of nuclear transition by super-intense x-ray laser fields. Related to this, we address the effects of atomic vacancies on the nuclear lifetimes and on mechanisms to populate the excited nuclear levels. As an application, we discuss prospects of nuclear isomer triggering and compare the efficiency of different triggering mechanisms in view of the recent advances in x-ray laser and ion storage technology.
