When a relativistic electron passes through the periodic structures of a single crystal, additionally to incoherent bremsstrahlung, coherent radiation can be produced with various processes. In recent experiments, the low emittance electron beam of MAMI has been applied to study planar channelling radiation and coherent bremsstrahlung in silicon single crystals. Complex channelling patterns and photon spectra, ranging from 1 MeV to 55 MeV, were observed as a function of crystal orientation.
The de-channeling process of electrons in silicon single crystals has been examined for (110)-planar channeling at beam energies between 200 and 855 MeV [1].
A periodically bent single crystal, e.g. crystalline undulator, could serve as a powerful radiation source with a narrow spectral distribution in the hard X-ray and γ-ray region. Experiments have been initiated at MAMI to explore the radiation emission from a 4-period epitaxially grown strained-layer Si1-xGex undulator with a period length of 50 μm at (110)-planar channeling of electrons with an energy of 855 MeV. The aim of these experiments is to check the suitability of such a crystalline undulator for monochromatic radiation production employing both, electrons [2] as well as positrons.
