Title: Towards a fundamental understanding of light nuclei and their low-energy reactions
Abstract: A fundamental treatment of nuclear reactions requires the solution of the many-body quantum-mechanical problem in the continuum. This is an extremely difficult task. Lagging behind nuclear structure studies, ab initio calculations for scattering processes involving more than four nucleons overall are still a rare exception. This leaves a number of unsolved issues in nuclear reactions, which have far reaching repercussions on the physics of stellar evolution and fusion-energy generation, on the standard solar model, on the role of the continuum in weakly bound nuclei, and, ultimately, on our understanding of the fundamental interactions among nucleons.
During this colloquium, I will review progress made in recent years and present a potentially groundbreaking strategy that will lead to a truly ab initio and quantitative theory for the description of bound low-lying states, cluster resonant states, and reactions of light nuclei.
Stimulants will be available 15 minutes before the talk.
