Title: Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry and the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics
Abstract: From its dawn at the turn of the 20th century, progress in elementary particle physics has been driven by serendipitous discoveries, breakthroughs in experimental techniques, and triumphant theoretical insights. Some of the most influential have been the discovery in 1964 of CP violation in K-meson decays by Cronin and Fitch (Nobel Prize 1980) and its daring explanation in 1973 by Kobayashi and Maskawa (1/2 of Nobel Prize 2008).
In this talk, we will trace the evolution of our knowledge and understanding of CP violation: its implications for cosmology, manifestations in particle decays and interactions, and the role it has played in the development of the Standard Model of particle physics. We will also review the accomplishments of the BaBar and Belle B-factory experiments in making precise measurements of matter-antimatter asymmetries in B-meson decays and searching for signs of physics beyond the Standard Model.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
