Title: Research and Development for the SPES Target
Abstract: The SPES Project (Selective Production of Exotic Species), now under development at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro LNL-INFN, belongs to the family of ISOL facilities. The main characteristic of such facility is the production of neutron rich isotopes (Z>40) with high fission rate 10^13 fissions/sec, by directly impinging a 40 MeV proton beam of I= 200 μm on seven coaxial uranium carbide disks.
The development of a target possessing tailored properties and high efficiency represents one of the main challenges of this project. This starts from the target design, and pass through the development of materials (UCx thin disks) possessing controlled grain size, porosity, thermal and mechanical properties. An overview of the SPES project will be presented, focusing attention on the target set-up and materials development.
