Title: Nuclear Structure Investigations in Exotic Nuclei
Abstract: This presentation will cover two topics; The RISING campaign at GSI and the future SPICE detector at TRIUMF. The RISING (Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI) campaign conducted at GSI in Germany utilized relativistic projectile fragmentation reactions to access some of the most exotic nuclei yet studied. In a series of experiments both Isomer decay and ground-state beta decay were used as tools to access excited states and address key nuclear structure questions. This presentation will concentrate on the studies performed on the odd-odd N=Z nuclei, 82Nb and 86Tc related to neutron-proton pairing approaching 100Sn as well as spectroscopic studies of nuclei 'south' of 208Pb to address the suggestion of a N=126 shell quenching.
The second part of the presentation will describe the future SPICE (SPectrometer for Internal Conversion Electrons) detector to be coupled to the TIGRESS array at ISAC II. SPICE will use a magnetic lens formed of rare-earth permanent magnets to collect and transport internal conversion electrons emitted from excited nuclear states to an array of electron detectors. An overview will be given of the research and design work performed to date as well as a discussion of the physics opportunities available through performing in-beam electron spectroscopy with both stable and radioactive ion beams for studying shape coexistence and intruder configurations in nuclei throughout the nuclear chart.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
