Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Thomas Parker (European Spallation Source)

Title: Sustainable Science Solutions

Abstract: Big Science depends on legitimacy. Legitimacy is gained by contribution to knowledge and development. Specifically, today, the expected contribution to sustainable development is in focus. Big Science facilities contribute to sustainable development through knowledge and innovation, but will also, like industry, also have to show improved management of negative impacts.

The bid to host the European Spallation Source was won for Lund, Sweden with a concept of a sustainable research center which put unique emphasis on sustainable operations, especially concerning energy use. The approach is called Responsible, Renewable, Reliable and calls for reduction and control of energy use, use of renewable sources of energy, and recycling of waste heat. The challenges in reaching these goals involve technology, management and financing. If the goals are achieved, the benefits in legitimacy will be substantial and there will also be considerable savings both in initial investment and in operations.

Stimulants will be available 15 minutes before the talk.
