Title: The Jefferson Lab Light Source Program

Abstract: The Jefferson Lab FEL facility now has both an infrared and an ultraviolet (UV) free-electron laser. Currently, the IR Upgrade FEL operates from 900nm to 4.2 microns, the UV Demo FEL from 360 – 700nm. By adjusting the energy of the linac the long wavelength range of the FELs can be extended. Both FELs produced record levels of average power, in subpicosecond pulses at MHz rep rates. We are also operating the UV Demo FEL with a hole output coupler that will allow us to take advantage of the shorter wavelengths from the harmonic naturally produced in the FEL. Experiments are already in the planning stage to use light with a photon energy of ~10 eV. We are also proposing a 4th generation light source covering the 10-100 eV range in the fundamental mode with harmonics stretching towards the oxygen K-edge. The new photon science user facility will feature a two-pass superconducting linac to accelerate the electron beam to 600MeV at repetition rates of 4.68MHz. In this presentation we will discuss the experiments that motivated the construction of this machine and outline some of the proposed experiments in the vacuum ultraviolet, first with the harmonics of the existing FEL, and later with the proposed facility.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
