Title:     Medical Radionuclides

Abstract: The world’s chief medical isotope is technetium-99m, used in nearly 40 million medical procedures each year.  In light of supply disruptions over the past three years because of unscheduled maintenance and repair outages of aging nuclear reactors, the race to develop alternative production methods has accelerated.  Both U.S. and Canadian governments have invested millions of dollars of public funds to address this situation.  In this presentation, I will survey the chief options being examined and comment on the two primary approaches being developed in Canada, which are based on accelerators.  The proposed operating models for the different technologies will also be discussed.
