Title: The Clear-PEM detector: development, characteristics and applications

Abstract: The Clear-PEM system is a dual-headed system developed towards PET mammography applications. It results from a cooperative effort of about 40 different people (public and private) spanning 6 years. It consists of APD-based detector modules that are capable of measuring photon depth-of-interaction (DOI) with a resolution of 2 mm in 2x2x20 mm LYSO:Ce crystals. The full system comprises 192 detector modules in a total of 6144 crystals and 384 32-pixel APD arrays organized into detector supermodules. These are readout by 64 hybrid digital/analogical, very low noise ASICs with 192 input channels each (with a total of 12 288 input channels). The system includes Frontend and Data Acquisition and an adequate cooling system and makes the Clear-PEM system the most densely packed PEM system available. The use of double readout allows obtaining a spatial resolution which is better than 2 mm in the whole FOV. Image reconstruction for this system can be done using 2D or 3D iterative statistical or algebraic algorithms (ART, MLEM, OSEM, OSMAPOSL). In this talk we will be presenting the main technical characteristics of the Clear-PEM detector and systems and some of the data obtained with the two available prototypes. We will be given some emphasis on the detector characteristics performance and on image reconstruction procedures, as well as on existing and new applications foreseen for this system.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
