Title:     Sensor and Actuator Concepts with Surface Acoustic Waves

Abstract: Surface Acoustic Waves can be excited and detected on a large variety of solid surfaces by different methods, e.g. using piezoelectric interdigital transducers attached to the substrate to be investigated or thermoacoustic excitation and interferometric detection with a Laser Doppler Interferometer. Physical properties of those waves as well as interaction phenomena with different media, e.g. the mode conversion effect, will be explained. Examples will be provided with respect to the realisation of touch-sensitive objects, the surveillance of liquids or the propulsion of liquids caused by momentum transfer from the sound radiation field. Future applications with respect to the contactless measurement of surface properties or the acceleration of electrochemical reactions at solid-liquid boundaries will be discussed in some detail.
