Title: The AISSat-1 satellite and some early results

Abstract: The AISSat-1 satellite was successfully launched from southern India on July 12, 2010 and is believed to be the first low cost nano-satellite to provide an observational service to governmental authorities and agencies. The mission objective is to observe and monitor maritime activities primarily in the Norwegian High North and High South by detection of AIS messages, but AISSat-1 can also perform full global AIS mapping. The AISSat-1 project is developed and managed by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), Kjeller, Norway.

The satellite is a 20 cm (8 inch) cube carrying a software defined radio (SDR) for AIS reception. The SDR is developed by Kongsberg Seatex AS, Norway. The satellite platform is based on the generic nano-satellite bus (GNB) developed by the Space Flight Laboratory at University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS/SFL).

The satellite receives AIS information broadcasted from maritime vessels, and forwards this information via the ground station at Svalbard to the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA). AISSat-1 thereby extends the range of the Norwegian ground based AIS observation network to also cover Norwegian ocean areas at the high seas.

The AISSat-1 satellite and some early results will be presented to demonstrate that a low cost nano-satellite can provide excellent and much needed maritime observations to governmental authorities and agencies.
