Title: Imaging the Functioning Human Brain with Positron Emission Tomography (PET): Applications in Studies of Drug Abuse and ADHD
Abstract: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) research is enriched and strengthened by the integration of multiple disciplines. However, it is advances in radiotracer chemistry that have played the pivotal role in driving the field in new directions in studies of human physiology and various diseases. At the heart of this development is synthetic chemistry directed to the rapid incorporation of simple short-lived positron emitters into organic compounds that can be used to study specific biochemical transformations and the movement of drugs in the human brain as well as other organs in the body. PET studies in the fields of neuroscience and neuropharmacology using various positron-labeled drugs and radiotracers to target various neurotransmitter systems that allow us to better understand the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disease, substance abuse, normal aging, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will be discussed.
The NRC-IFCI is located at 4250 Wesbrook Mall near the intersection with Southwest Marine Drive. Stimulants available in the TRIUMF cafeteria 30 minutes before the talk.
