Title: Advances in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy

Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a radiological imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to acquire cross-sectional images of organs and structures inside the human body. Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) is a analytical technique that permits the study of metabolic changes in-vivo. Both techniques contributed to the advancement of clinical diagnostic radiology and led to several Noble Prizes in Physics and Medicine.

At the University of Chicago Medical Center, we use MRI and MRS methods at 1.5T, 3T and 9.4T to quantitatively analyze disease, disease progression and response to therapy. MRI allows the quantitative non-invasive measurement of physical properties (e.g. diffusion, perfusion, susceptibility ) in tissue. At the University of Chicago we have the unique opportunity to use a therapeutic High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) system for the ablation of tissue in patients and we use MRI and MRS to guide and monitor the ultrasound treatment. The superb soft tissue contrast of MRI and the possibility to quantify temperature changes non-invasively in an whole body MRI system allows a quantitative assessment of this new ultrasound treatment method.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
