Title: Dielectric Waveguide

Abstract: The VECC/ARIEL employs a RF electron gun as the electron source.
The cathode and grid of the gun are biased to -300kV and -300.4kV, respectively, and therefore
must be housed inside a hermetically sealed high voltage chamber. Up to 200W of RF power at 650 MHz
is required to operate the gun, and since it is not desirable to place the RF power amplifier and
LLRF control inside the high voltage chamber, a dielectric waveguide is used to transport the
RF power from the outside into the gun inside the high voltage chamber.

The dielectric waveguide being constructed for this purpose is a 105mm diameter cylindrical ceramic rod of 1228mm in length. Metallic cups of 325mm are used at both ends to launch and to receive the RF, leaving an insulated length of 578mm, where the hybrid HE11 mode is the dominant mode for RF propagation. This talk gives a general description of matching the dielectric waveguide to coaxial lines at both ends.
