Title: Storage Rings with Beam Cooling: Accelerator Systems for High Precision Experiments with Ion and Rare Isotope Beams
Abstract: The application of beam cooling in ion storage rings allows a dramatic improvement of phase space density. The reduction of momentum spread and beam emittance results in a much better definition of beam parameters. Beam cooling also counteracts the heating of the stored beam by an internal target and allows techniques like beam accumulation, which is particularly important for low intensity secondary beams, and the deceleration of highly charged ion and rare isotope beams. For the operation of the ESR storage ring at GSI various techniques employing beam cooling have been developed and provide variable conditions for physics experiments. An overview of the achievements and the potential in future applications will be given.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
