Title: Neutron Stars: From Fossils to Fuel for Nucleosynthesis

Abstract: Neutron stars, the end point of stellar evolution of massive stars, have emerged as excellent laboratories for the physics of strongly interacting dense matter. Astrophysics and Nuclear Physics converge in this unique system, which also serves as a test bed for strong gravity and magnetic fields. In my talk, I will discuss theoretical calculations highlighting three areas where neutron stars play a key role: (i) the emission of gravitational waves associated to the r-mode instability of neutron stars, which is linked to the maximum spin rate of pulsars; (ii) nucleosynthesis of heavy elements through decompression of neutron-rich matter ejected from a neutron star, which presents conditions favoring a strong r-process; (iii) the high-density equation of state, with emphasis on the sensitivity of neutrino cooling to dense phases of QCD. I will also mention how each of these areas can be refined by upcoming observational and experimental efforts.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
