Title: Recent Results on Shape Coexistence in Nuclei

Abstract: The shape of atomic nuclei often deviates from a spherical mass distribution as soon as we leave arrangements with closed proton and neutron shells. The most common deviation from sphericity is the quadrupole deformation, i.e. elongated or compressed elipsoidal shapes, but higher order deviations exist as well. The development of nuclear deformation is intimately linked to the erosion of the (spherical) shell structure characterised by the so-called "magic numbers” of the nuclear shell model. In some nuclei different shapes exist in a very narrow range of excitation energy (1 MeV or less), which is referred to as shape coexistence.

In this colloquium I will report on recent experiments to characterise the evolution of nuclear shapes and the phenomenon of shape coexistence. After a basic introduction and a desciption of the experimental methods used to characterise collective nuclear excitations and nuclear shapes I will report some recent results concentrating on regions of the nuclear chart that have attracted strong attention in recent years, namely medium heavy nuclei close to the N=Z line and neutron-rich nuclei around 68Ni and 100Zr.

Refreshments 15 minutes before the seminar.
