Title: Developing the Next Generation of SRF Cavities with Nb3Sn
Abstract: Cryogenic plants for large SRF linacs cost on the order of 100 million dollars and require megawatts of power to operate. New treatments have been developed for niobium cavities to decrease the cryogenic support required to operate them, but in the future, an even stronger benefit could be realized via an alternative superconductor: Nb3Sn. I will present my efforts at Cornell to develop facilities to fabricate high quality, uniformly stoichiometric Nb3Sn films over niobium cavities. I will show results from the array of cavity tests, microscopic studies, and high magnetic field measurements that I carried out to characterize the films. Finally, I will discuss the promising outlook for this novel SRF material in scientific and industrial accelerator applications.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
