Title:     ISO Management Standards, the Scientific Method, and American Pragmatism

Abstract: These three unlikely topics are tied together by the work of the management guru (and physicist) W. Edwards Deming  (1900 – 1993). Deming is credited with providing the management system that allowed the Japanese to excel after the Second World War and the Ford motor company to recover economically in the 1980s. He is also the link between the works of the American pragmatic philosopher C.I. Lewis (1883 – 1964) and essentially all current ISO management standards. The historical development and its implication for the understanding and use of ISO management standards is discussed.
