Tue Jun 30 05:00:01 PDT 2015

Date/Time: Tue 2015-06-30 at 10:00

Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Jean-luc Doumont (Principiae/ Belgium)

Title: Open Seminar (IsoSiM School): "Structuring Your Research Paper"

Abstract: Structuring your research paper is one of the most demanded topics on university campuses. It can be nicely captured by Hemingway’s statement that “prose is architecture, not interior decoration”. During the seminar Dr. Jean-luc Doumont will explain how to structure a paper from the point of view of the readers, not the logic of the authors, to make it more convincing. Specifically, the seminar will cover structure from the whole paper down to paragraphs, and discuss how to construct effective abstracts.

About the speaker:
Dr. Jean-luc Doumont, the Nature Series Editor and Lead Author of English Communication for Scientists, is an engineer from the Louvain School of Engineering and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University. A world-acclaimed expert on scientific communication, Jean-luc has 20 years of experience running lectures and workshops on writing scientific papers, giving oral presentations, graphing data, and related topics. His audiences include graduate students, postdocs, and faculty at top-notch universities around the world (including MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Caltech, and Harvard), scientists at public research centers (such as NIST, CDC, VIB, ICFO) and at private R&D centers (such as HHMI, Shell, Johnson & Johnson).

This lecture will run from 10:00 to 12:00 and is open to everyone.
