Title: The TRIUMF nine-cell SRF cavity for ARIEL
Abstract: The nine cell cavity is an integral part of the ARIEL eLINAC. With it, energy is transferred to the electron beam that then is transported to a target station to create rare isotopes for the ISAC program at TRIUMF. An upgrade plan for the eLINAC forsees a recirculating beam line to create an energy recovery LINAC (ERL) based light source. In this scheme, the accelerated beam passes through an undulator and is then returned to the accelerating cavities at a decelerating phase to return its energy to the electromagnetic fields inside the SRF cavity. This significantly reduces needed RF power. A potential risk for ERLs is beam break up (BBU). The passing beam could excite dipole modes inside the cavity. These modes then kick following bunches, which can further increase the dipole mode field amplitude and ultimately lead to beam losses. To prevent BB, a limit for the shunt impedance of these higher order modes is set. This talk will go over some of the design considerations for the nine-cell cavity for the ARIEL eLINAC with a focus on the prevention of
beam break up. In addition, measurements on the cavity regarding HOMs and accelerating performance will be shown.
