Title:     The shell model as an ab initio tool

Abstract: Substantial progress has been made in the past few years in applying microscopic interactions nuclear interactions to the structure of medium-mass nuclei. One of the most promising new tools for this task is the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG). In this talk, I will attempt to give an intuitive introduction to the method, with particular emphasis on its use in conjunction with more traditional shell-model techniques. Some recent results for nuclei in the sd shell will also be presented.
