Title:     Management Systems in the Canadian Nuclear Industry

Abstract: In keeping with international best practice, the CNSC amended its regulatory framework in 2009 to evolve from having quality assurance requirements for the activity licensed to a broader set of management system requirements. This evolution continues with the development of IAEA guidance, CSA standards and CNSC REGDOCs. The development and publication in 2012 of the Canadian nuclear industry CSA N286-12 standard entitled "Management system requirements for nuclear facilities" introduced an updated set of expectations extending beyond Nuclear Power Plants to other Class 1 and UMM licensees.

This technical briefing presents fundamental information regarding management systems in the nuclear industry with a particular focus on CSA N286-12 . It also explains the role and importance of licensees' management systems for safety, how they are regulated and how oversight is accomplished in the Canadian context.
