Title: Phases of Strongly Interacting Matter: from Quarks to Nuclei and Neutron Stars
Abstract: The emergence of phases and structures in QCD, the quantum field theory of the Strong
Interaction, is one of the persistently fundamental issues in modern science. This
presentation reviews our current understanding in this field. Empirical information from
nuclear collisions at the highest available energies will be surveyed together with results of
Lattice QCD thermodynamics. Important constraints come from nuclear physics and the
treatment of the nuclear many-body problem using modern effective field theory
approaches that are based on the symmetry-breaking pattern of low-energy QCD. The
presentation concludes with a discussion of new conditions for the equation-of-state of
dense baryonic matter derived from recently observed massive (two-solar-mass) neutron
stars.
