Title: Measurements of masses and beta-decay properties of neutron-rich isotopes for astrophysics

Abstract: Some of the most exciting and fundamental open questions in nuclear astrophysics require a precise understanding of the nuclear structure properties of very neutron-rich isotopes. For most astrophysical models of the synthesis of heavy elements during the rapid-neutron capture process (r-process), nuclear masses and beta-decay properties of unstable isotopes have a strong imprint on the resulting abundances. Nuclear masses are also a critical input to models of neutron stars. They directly affect the chemical composition of their crust, and in the case of neutron stars in accreting binary systems masses are necessary to study nuclear processes affecting its thermal profile.
I will discuss sensitive experimental techniques with fast beams which, coupled to the intense yields of neutron-rich isotopes at modern radioactive ion beam facilities, are able to study isotopes at or near the regions of astrophysical interest. In particular, I will present our recent measurements of nuclear masses with the time-of-flight technique at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN. I will also discuss our program of beta-decay experiments with the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) at RIBF.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
