Title: Bayesian uncertainty quantification for effective field theories
Abstract: Properly constructed effective field theories hold the promise of model independence and order-by-order convergence of observable calculations. We have entered an era in low-energy nuclear physics where many-body methods are precise enough that we are sensitive to uncertainties in nuclear interactions. The predictable order-by-order improvement of EFT calculations means that systematic uncertainties from EFT truncation can be estimated and incorporated when fitting the low-energy constants to data. By using Bayesian methods, we can quantify these physical expectations along with others such as LEC naturalness for a fully consistent parameter estimation procedure. Bayesian model selection diagnostics are used to make quantitative statements about the impact of the available data on our ability to constrain the LECs and to diagnose convergence problems with the EFT. The final result is a probability distribution (pdf) for the LECs which can be used to propagate uncertainty resulting from the fit to data to the final observable predictions.
