Title: Improved understanding of the structure of 100Sn and nuclei in its vicinity
Abstract: Multiple intriguing topics of nuclear structure converge on the
doubly-magic nucleus 100Sn, which is known for its superallowed
Gamow-Teller (GT) decay with the largest GT strength of all allowed nuclear
beta decays. Experimental data on 100Sn and its neighbours provide
sensitive tests of nuclear structure theories: robustness of N = Z = 50
shells, limits of proton binding, proton-neutron interactions of heavy N ~
Z nuclei, etc. In addition, macroscopic properties of these nuclei are
essential inputs for the rp-process of nuclear astrophysics.
A decay spectroscopy experiment in the 100Sn region was performed at the
RIKEN Nishina Center. A new record for 100Sn production was achieved,
accompanied by the discovery of exotic N < Z isotopes at or beyond the
proton drip line. Beta decays, beta-delayed proton emission, and gamma rays
of N ~ Z nuclei were measured and analysed to address the topics of
interest stated above. The results from this experiment are generally
consistent with shell model predictions based on robust N = Z = 50 shell
closures. Prospective experiments to address remaining questions in this
region of nuclides will be presented.
