Q&A with Jens (15 minutes);

Iain McKenzie - "What Has Molecular and Materials Science Ever Done For Us?" (25 minutes)

I'm often asked "Why do you bother studying materials?" and I typically exasperatedly respond "Because everything around us is made of materials." By exploiting the properties of materials we have been able to make amazing technology that has a direct impact on our everyday lives, even nuclear and particle physicists. The corollary to this is that by increasing our knowledge of how materials behave, especially at the molecular level, we will enable the development of even more advanced technology. We've moved beyond our five senses to probe material properties and we now have a wide range of techniques to probe various aspects of a material. muSR and betaNMR are powerful tools to probe the behaviour of materials at the molecular level and I will present some examples of how they are used to study everything from magnetism and superconductivity to free radical chemistry. Sure, we aren't answering the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything but we are contributing to making your life more convenient and healthier.
