Title:     Negative Ion Source Research at D-Pace's Ion Source Test Facility.

Abstract: Negative Ion Source Research at D-Pace’s Ion Source Test Facility
D-Pace’s Ion Source Test Facility (ISTF) has been in operation for a little over two years. The purpose of the ISTF is to further develop D-Pace’s existing products, including the TRIUMF licensed filament powered H− ion source and emittance scanner, as well as to develop new products, such as an RF powered H− ion source and various other ion beams (negative and positive) with our current ion sources. The ISTF consists of a short 30 kV beamline where both filament and RF powered ion sources are tested, and beam properties are measured with a pneumatic Faraday Cup, an emittance scanner and a 656:1 energy resolution spectrometer. The first main research activity was the development of a new 13.56 MHz RF H− ion source technology, which is a hybrid design composed of the TRIUMF licensed H− ion source’s body and extraction system with the RF window, antenna and impedance matching system licensed from the University of Jyväskylä. Secondly, the production of negative carbon ions is investigated with both ion source technologies by using acetylene as the feed gas. I will give a brief overview of the ISTF as well as a description of the RF powered ion source and I will compare the H−/D− beam properties of the RF ion source with the filament powered technology. Finally, I will present the latest results on the production of negative carbon ions with the volume cusp technology.
