Title: Recent results and future prospects for long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments in Japan
Abstract: The Tokai-to-Kamiokande (T2K) long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan started operation in 2010 and has been leading the field since then. In this colloquium I will present the latest results of the T2K experiment from a total beam exposure of 2.23e21 protons on target. In addition, a 27% increase in statistics was achieved through improvements to the event reconstruction at Super-Kamiokande (SK), the T2K far detector.
Continuing upgrades to the T2K neutrino beam will increase the beam power from its current level, 475 kW, to 1.3 MW around 2021. This will be matched by a new far detector, Hyper-Kamiokande (HK), with a fiducial volume approximately 8 times that of SK. These improvements will allow HK to collect electron neutrino and anti-neutrino appearance samples with statistical uncertainties below 3%, making it possible to observe CP violation in the lepton sector.
I will present the current status and sensitivities of HK, along with an overview of the challenges the experiment faces as it becomes limited by systematic rather than statistical uncertainties. I will finish by discussing E61 (NuPRISM), a Canadian-led experiment that will overcome these obstacles and ensure the success of Hyper-Kamiokande.
