Present and Future of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) Searches with Liquid Argon Detectors
Strong evidence indicates that the standard model of particle physics only describes about 4% of the total matter in the universe. The vast majority of the universe mass, 27% circa, is actually comprised of non-baryonic matter, referred to as Dark Matter (DM). Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) have emerged as the most theoretically supported DM candidate, with multiple experiments dedicated to their discovery. In particular, low-background liquid argon (LAr) experiments offer a unique approach to this type of research, by exploiting the intrinsic properties of argon scintillation which allow to distinguish between electron-induced recoils and nuclear-induced recoils with a rejection power of 10^10. In this talk, we will overview the current status of present LAr detectors, with emphasis on the DEAP-3600 and DarkSide-20k projects. Furthermore, we will introduce the current plans for a future multi-hundred-tonnes scale detector capable of probing WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scatters reaching the neutrino-floor.
