Title: Target developments at the SPES facility

Abstract: SPES, acronym for Selective Production of Exotic Species, is an ISOL facility under construction at INFN-LNL (Legnaro National Laboratories of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics), aimed at the production of a characteristic set of neutron rich beams whose diverse applications range from physics to nuclear medicine. In particular, when a 40 MeV 200 microAmp proton beam impinges on the SPES Uranium Carbide target approximately 10^13 fissions/s are generated. The target was developed by making use of a massive amount of MC and FEM simulations, and the conceptual design was successfully tested at HRIBF at ORNL. An overview of the SPES facility will be provided with a deeper focus on the most recent developments related to the Target-Ion Source unit. In addition, the medical applications of SPES, ISOLPHARM will be briefly presented.
