Title: Water structure at charged solid-liquid interfaces

Abstract: The structure of water adjacent to solid surfaces is of fundamental importance to separation technologies, the molecular basis of biocompatibility, water purification processes, and surface chemistry. Even-order nonlinear optical probes are capable of selectively studying interfacial water to a depth of a few nanometers directly in the presence of the adjacent bulk water phase, on account of the symmetry-breaking requirements for the relevant susceptibility tensor elements. When this experiment is carried out with one of the beams in the infrared, further structural information can be obtained through characteristic vibrational resonances of interfacial species. This presentation will highlight some of our recent developments in this area. This includes our new multi-angle measurements that modulate the nonlinear coherence length to be on the order of the Debye length, thereby providing access to the surface potential.
