Title: Quantum Computing with Trapped Ions

Abstract: Trapped ions are one of the leading candidates in the grand challenge to realize a quantum computer. Research has progressed from the early demonstrations of quantum logic gates on pairs of ions to today's efforts by universities, industry and government institutions to scale up devices to more ions and more logic gates. We are at a juncture in time where small-scale processors based on trapped ions are in the process of being brought to market by several ventures. In this talk I will review how trapped ions controlled by lasers and other electromagnetic fields can be used for quantum information processing and will discuss the current state of the technology.

Lecture series on quantum computing (4/5)
