Title: Emissivity measurement optimization for ISOL targets

Abstract: To circumvent challenges presented by conventional temperature measurement methods that rely on physical contact, a two-color pyrometer has been calibrated to within 60 °C for optical temperature measurement of tantalum ISOL Targets at TRIUMF. Additionally, TRIUMF’s Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) requires a new design of an ISOL target container that approaches an emissivity (ε) of 1 without the use of cooling fins. Alternative high-emissivity options are being explored; simulations have shown that laser micro-machining has the potential to increase the emissivity of tantalum by greater than Δε = 0.5 in a relevant wavelength band.

presentation is part of the TISD seminar
